The “Old Castle” was the Mansion of the Keep, seigniorial dwelling of the younger branch of the Valois family.
Today, the castle is composed of two buildings joined at right angles: the seigniorial dwelling and the Saint-Aubin chapel.
The seigniorial dwelling, most of it 13th century, has three levels: basement, lower hall, upper hall.
The lower hall was the common floor housing the seigniorial servants. The upper hall lighted by five large bay-windows covered by timberwork shaped like the inverted hull of a ship, was the noble floor, the state-room of the lord.
In 1560, the “Old Castle” became the seat of the administration of the bailiff's office and the Duchy of Valois until the Revolution.
Founded by the younger branch of the Valois family, the Saint-Aubin chapel is a hall with three bays vaulted with gothic arches. It probably dates back to the end of the 12th century, before the construction of the seigniorial dwelling. It contains an upper chapel dedicated to the Holy Virgin.
